Ballard (Hiram M. Chittenden) Locks

The Ballard Locks, officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, are a crucial component of the Lake Washington Ship Canal in Seattle, Washington. Constructed in 1917, these dual locks, named after engineer Hiram M. Chittenden, facilitate the movement of boats between the saltwater of Puget Sound and the freshwater lakes, helping them navigate the elevation difference. The locks feature a large chamber for bigger vessels and a small chamber for smaller boats. Additionally, a fish ladder aids the migration of salmon. Surrounded by gardens and a visitor center, the Ballard Locks are a popular attraction, offering visitors the opportunity to witness the intriguing process of "locking through" and enjoy the picturesque setting.
