Belle Isle Hydroelectric Plant

This abandoned plant is at the end of a fun hike across a bridge on this small island in Richmond. There's a wealth of history on this island - it was originally a Native American settlement. John Smith was the first European to explore the island in 1607. A couple centuries later, it was the site of factories and then a prison camp for captured Union soldiers. More recently, the bridge could be seen in the blockbuster film Hannibal when Agent Starling runs across the bridge. Access to the island is easy; simply park for free at the lot off of Tredegar Street, just north of the island. (Submitted by Mischelle Busby)
