Nick’s Hamburger Shop has been a Brookings favorite since 1929 when Harold and Gladys Nikalson first cooked their famous “Nickburger” on a white gas stove during Hobo Day. The shop moved into its current building in 1932 and has remained a cherished local landmark ever since, even earning a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Ownership has changed only a few times over the decades but the classic recipe and nostalgic diner atmosphere have stayed the same. Today visitors flock for the signature Nickburger made with fresh beef along with double burgers, cheeseburgers, thick shakes, and homemade pies.
