The drive on the Needles Highway covers 14 miles of road which present spectacular views and drive throughs of pine and spruce forests for the traveller. This was one carefully planned roadway by former South Dakota Governor, Peter Norbeck. The road's construction was completed in 1922. An exceptional area of the road is when you pass Sylvan Lake and pass a unique rock formation rightly called the Needle's Eye. The formation was named for its opening which was formed by the wind, rain, freezing, and thawing. The Scenic Overlook provides a great view of the Black Hills and some interesting rock formations.
