Description:

The Nittany Lion Shrine is a majestic Indiana limestone sculpture of a mountain lion, carved by artist Heinz Warneke and dedicated in 1942 as a gift from Penn State’s Class of 1940. Nestled in a tranquil grove near Rec Hall on University Park’s campus, the shrine has become the most photographed spot in Pennsylvania and is celebrated for traditions like the annual “Guard the Lion” homecoming vigil after rival-painting pranks. In 2013, the Class of 2012 enhanced its surroundings—adding accessible pathways, lighting, and seating—making it both more inclusive and visually captivating.
