The Fort Towson Historic Site in Fort Towson, Oklahoma has a significant history dating back to the early 19th century. Established in 1824 as a military outpost, it played a crucial role during the Indian Removal era, serving as an assembly point for tribes before their forced relocation. The fort also had strategic importance during the Mexican-American War and later became a contested site during the Civil War. After abandonment, the site was acquired by the Oklahoma Historical Society in 1960 for restoration and preservation. (Submitted by Kelli Seeman-Smith)
