Description:
The Tavern in Old Salem in Winston Salem, North Carolina, traces its roots to 1784 when the Moravian community built it as the first fully brick structure in their settlement after an earlier tavern from 1771 burned down. It quickly became an important stop for travelers and merchants and famously hosted George Washington during his 1791 Southern Tour. Over time the building went through periods of use and decline before being restored as part of the Old Salem historic district. When operating as a restaurant it was known for hearty regional dishes such as pot roast, country fried steak, chicken livers, Moravian inspired recipes, and desserts like chocolate bourbon pecan pie and apple cake.
