Description:

The St. Louis Central Library opened in 1912 and was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert as the flagship of the St. Louis Public Library system, funded largely by Andrew Carnegie. The building is a striking example of Beaux-Arts and Italian Renaissance–inspired architecture, with a grand stone façade, arched entrances, and carefully balanced classical details. Inside, visitors are greeted by soaring spaces, ornate detailing, and elegant marble floors that reflect light and emphasize the library’s monumental scale. A major renovation completed in 2012 preserved the historic character while updating the building for modern use, ensuring it remains one of St. Louis’s most impressive civic landmarks.
