Soulard has the distinction of being one of the oldest operating public markets in the USA. It gets its name from French surveyor Antoine Soulard who settled here in Spanish Colonial times. The Italian Renaissance structure was built in 1929, although the market had been established in 1779. Today, vendors sell fresh produce, handcrafted Asian jewelry, hats and notions, homemade toiletries, bread, and lots of other stuff A-Z. For a complete list of what you might find here visit the market website. (Submitted by Lainie Ayres)
