Description:
The oldest 45th‑Parallel marker in the U.S. stands about two miles north of Perry, Maine, in a small roadside park on Route 1. Originally marked by a brass pin in 1888 during a Coast and Geodetic Survey, local citizens later replaced it with a red granite monument inscribed “Latitude 45° North, halfway from the equator to the pole,” carved in 1896 and formally installed on July 4, 1899. Though modern GPS places the true 45th parallel about 140 feet north of the stone, it remains the earliest enduring tribute to this halfway line in the U.S.
