The Little Brown Church

This historic church was built in 1864, but was made famous well before its conception! Legend has it that Rev. William Pitts rode through the town by coach and was inspired to compose his song about an imagined place of worship. His dreams came to fruition and the church was built soon thereafter. In the 1920s and the 1930s, it became famous when traveling singers known as the Weatherwax Quartet performed the song as they toured. Today, most visitors come to see the "Church in the Wildwood" because of them. (Submitted by Shirley Beauchemin Thurston)
