The stunning view from the Waipio Valley Lookout on the north side of the Big Island is considered by many to be one of the most breathtaking sights, not only in Hawaii, but anywhere on earth. The tropically lush Waipio Valley runs five miles inland from a black sand shore and stretches one mile across, and is encompassed by majestic green cliffs towering at 2000 feet. Rather than drive the steep and narrow road to the overlook, many choose to hike—but be ready to trek both down and up a 25% grade incline. The area also holds deep historical significance as it was once a densely populated region that served as the childhood stomping grounds of King Kamelhameha I and was a center for important political and religious activities.
