Dedicated by President Bush in 2004, the World War II Memorial is a series of 56 granite pillars commemorating the service of America's Greatest Generation. In 1945, the U.S. consisted of 48 states - thus each pillar represents one of those states plus DC, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Philippines, the Alaskan and Hawaiian Territories, and Puerto Rico. All of these states and territories contributed forces numbering an astounding 16 million of which 400,000 lost their lives. Since its unveiling, the site has attracted 4.5 million visitors from around the world.
