Pie ’n Burger was founded in 1963 by Benny and Florence Foote at 913 East California Boulevard and has maintained much of its original 1960s charm with formica countertops, wood panel walls, and a hand painted menu. Current owner Michael Osborn, who began working there in 1972 while a USC student and later bought out the Footes in 1992, has preserved the diner’s classic recipes and methods, like using a griddle for patties and serving burgers with their signature Thousand Island dressing. One of its most beloved items is the classic cheeseburger with quarter pound beef, American cheese, lettuce, pickles, and Thousand Island, and for dessert their homemade pies such as Dutch apple and meringue topped varieties are especially popular.
