In 1990, as the story goes, Stephen Ragsdale, better known as Desert Steve and former landowner of Desert Center, CA, planted hundreds of date palms to beautify the area. He arranged them in unique shapes—triangles, circles, and a few secret patterns only visible from the air—supposedly to signal aliens. Some like to believe his plan worked and the aliens took the palm fronds with them as a peace offering. Others think the palms were simply neglected, rotted, and eventually fell off.
