Abandoned Pedro Dredge

Chicken, AK was a gold mining town founded in the late 19th century. This giant excavation apparatus was officially known as F.E. Company Dredge No. 4, a heavy lifter built by the Yuba Mining Manufacturing Company of California and shipped to Fairbanks where it operated from 1938 to 1958. After Fairbanks it was disassembled and reassembled to perform the same duty in Chicken until work finally ceased in 1967. You can freely explore the grounds, although the building might not be open at that time. To find out more about tours call 907-782-4427. To get there take Airport Road south from Taylor Highway. Once on Airport Road make your first left into the RV park and follow the road until you see the dredge.
