Description:

This natural arch rises 215 feet in a gorge and probably was in the process of becoming more than 400 million years ago but was formed when a cavern collapsed. The initials GW are carved into the side of the bridge although it can't be confirmed that George Washington himself actually surveyed the bridge. It was a sacred place for the Monacan tribe before Europeans settled in Virginia and now is designated as a National Historic Landmark.
